Est. 1999 — Great Ocean Road
Nordenfine started with an idea shared between two brothers: make genuinely good, homemade ice cream — and, over the years, gelato and frozen yoghurt alongside it — and make it something the whole community could afford. Not a premium treat reserved for special occasions, just properly made ice cream, gelato, and frozen yoghurt, available every day, to the people they grew up alongside.
That idea became a business in 1999, and more than twenty-five years later, it’s still the only plan we’ve ever needed.
What we believe in
Good ice cream — or gelato, or frozen yoghurt — doesn’t need a gimmick. It needs real ingredients, patience, and someone who actually cares about getting the recipe right. That’s always been our approach — small batches, made properly, without cutting corners to hit a price point or chase a trend.
We’ve been fortunate enough to be recognised for it too, picking up industry awards consistently over the years. Not for one standout batch, but for holding the same standard year after year, scoop after scoop.
Why we look the way we look
Walk into a Nordenfine store and you won’t find polished fit-outs or Instagram-ready interiors. What you will find are classic ice cream cabinets and big, honest tubs — the same kind of setup that’s been serving communities like ours for generations.
That’s a deliberate choice. Every dollar we don’t spend on decor is a dollar we can put into the ice cream itself — better ingredients, better recipes, better value for the people buying it. We think that trade-off is worth making, every time.
Part of the family
After twenty-five years on the same stretch of coast, Nordenfine has become part of more than a few family stories. We now serve multiple generations of customers — people who grew up coming in for a scoop after school, and now bring their own kids in for the same thing.
We’ve had customers tell us their first date happened over a Nordenfine cone, one that eventually led to a marriage, and then a child of their own — a child who’s now growing up on the same ice cream their parents did. Those are the moments we love being a small part of: first dates, family holidays, after-footy treats, birthdays. We’ve been there for a lot of them, and we’re hoping to be there for the next generation too.
Where to find us
We grew up on the Great Ocean Road, and it’s still where you’ll find every scoop of Nordenfine today. We now operate three stores along the coast: Apollo Bay, Anglesea, and Torquay.
Our Torquay store is more than a scoop shop, it’s home base. It’s where all the magic happens, from the very first mix to the finished tub, before it makes its way out to our cabinets down the coast.
Twenty-five years on, we’re still doing it the same way: real ice cream, made properly, for the community that’s always been at the heart of it.
